VIERAITA SUOMESTA! --- GUESTS FROM FINLAND!

 Jounin veli ja hänen tyttöystävänsä tulivat käymään meillä kylässä lomareissullaan, ennen kuin lähdimme itse Suomeen viettämään Juhannusta. Olipas tosi kivaa saada vieraita Suomesta luoksemme Graziin.

. Jouni´s brother and his girlfriend popped by to visit us on their vacation before we went to Finland for Midsummer. It was so nice to have guests from Finland to visit us in Graz.

Kävimme yhdessä Schöckl –vuorella, joka sijaitsee n. 30 ajomatkan päässä Grazin keskustasta. Ylös vuorelle pääsee gondolihissillä. Schöcklin huippu on 1436 metrin korkeudella. 

We visited together the Schöckl hill. It´s about 30 mins drive by a car from the center of Graz. You can get up by a Cable car. The highest point of Schöckl is 1436 meters.

Olihan sieltä upeat näkymät vaikka sää olikin vähän pilvinen

Käytiin myös Seiersbergin ostarissa shoppailemassa. Tässä suomennetaan ruokalistaa.. ihan kaikkea en osaa vielä kääntää ilman sanakirjaa

We went shopping at Seiersberg mall. Here I try to translate the menu.. Some words I still have to look up from a dictionary..

Vierailun päätteeksi lähdimme kaikki yhdessä Wieniin, josta lensimme Suomeen Juhannuksen viettoon!

Then we all left together to Vienna and flew to Finland from there to celebrate the Midsummer

VIIRUN SYNTTÄRIT - VIIRU´S BIRTHDAY

Pieni rakas Viiru-kissamme täytti 10 vuotta. Ei meillä yleensä ole tapana juhlia kissojen synttäreitä, mutta täytyihän sitä jotenkin pyöreitä vuosia juhlistaa. Tarjolla oli kermavaahtoa ja katkarapuja, Viirun herkkuja! Joten tässäpä muutama kuva hullulta kissanaiselta (ja hänen mieheltään) ;)

Our little precious cat Viiru turned 10 years old. We don´t ususally celebrate our cats birthdays, but  since it was 10 round years, we did. We gave her whipped cream and shrimps, her favourites! So here´s a few photos from the grazy catlady (and her man) ;)

Paras kissanlelu ikinä löytyi rautakaupasta. Tuollainen euron maksava vaahtomuoviputkilo, jossa oli jotain suojamuovisuikaleita. Varsinkin Tikrun mielestä se on ihan mahtava :D

The best cat toy ever was found from a hardware store. A foam pipe that had some protective plastic "ribbons"and costed one Euro. Especially Tikru thinks its awesome :D

PYÖRÄILYÄ - BIKING

Täällä on paljon pyöräilijöitä ja pyöräreittejä. Osassa kaduista on todella kapeat jalkakäytävät ja pyöräily on sallittua myös monilla ajoteillä, useassa paikassa myös yksisuuntaista katua “vastakarvaan”. En ole aikaisemmin tottunut ajamaan autojen seassa, joten ajatus tuntui vähän pelottavalta. Lisäjännitystä pyöräilyyn tuovat vielä ratikkakiskot, joihin pyörän renkaan tipahtaessa voi mahdollisesti käydä vähän huonosti…kuulin tarinan siitä aiemmin...

Ystävä kutsui minut kotiinsa kahville ja matka mikä pyörällä kestää 20 minuuttia olisi julkisia käyttäen vienyt n.50 minuuttia. Ajattelin rohkaista mieleni ja uskaltautua pyörän selkään. Aluksi vähän pelotti mutta tottuihan siihen aika äkkiä. Pyöräilin yhteensä 11,6 km matkan ystävän luokse ja takaisin, selvisin hengissä ja ehjin nahoin ja nyt olen NIIN ylpeä itsestäni :D

Jälleen kerran.. pieni askel ihmiskunnalle, mutta VALTAVA askel Sannalle, hah!

Vietin todella kivan aamupäivän ystävän ja hänen pienen poikansa seurassa ja kotimatkalle lähtiessäni pieni Martin-poika (3 vee) antoi minulle suukon <3 Suloinen poika!

There´s quite much bikers and biking routes in here. Some of the streets have really narrow sidewalks and in many of those streets biking is also allowed on driveways, also in one-way streets against the other traffic. I have not been used to driving a bike amongst the cars so the idea of it felt a bit scary. In addition, in some streets there are also tramways so if a tire drops down there that could possibly end bad..I heard a story about that happening to someone...

A friend invited me over to her home for a coffee and the route there with bike is only 20 mins. The route using public transportation would have lasted almost 50 mins. So I thought I would try if I have the courage to go there by bike. At first it was scary, but I got used to it quite fast. I biked total of 11,6 km to my friend´s house and back, survived with no injuries and now I´m SO proud of myself :D

Again… a small step for mankind but a HUGE step for Sanna, hah!

I had a really nice morning with my friend and her little son. When I left home, this little boy Martin (3 years) kissed me goodbye <3 How sweet is that? Cute boy!

 

Google mapsin navigaattori osoittautui muuten tosi käteväksi pyörälläkin ajaessa!

Google maps navigator turned out to be really handy also when biking!

TRIESTE, ITALIA

Teimme pari viikkoa sitten viikonloppureissun Italian puolelle. Tämä olikin ensimmäinen kertamme Italiassa. Reittimme kulki Slovenian läpi, Mariborin ja Ljubljanan kautta Adrianmeren  rannalla sijaitsevaan Triesten kaupunkiin, jossa on noin 200 000 asukasta. Triesteen on Grazista noin kolmen tunnin ajomatka.

A few weeks ago we did a weekend trip to Italy´s side. This was our first time in Italy. Our route went across Slovenia, through Maribor and Ljubljana to the town called Trieste, which has about 200 000 inhabitants. Travelling time by car from Graz is about three hours.

 

CITY CENTER

Valloittava keskusta-alue oli helposti käveltävissä ja parkkipaikkoja löytyi rannan tuntumasta ihan mukavasti

Adorable city centre was quite compact and walkable and there were plenty of parking places near the see

THE AUSTRIAN QUARTER

Puolet kaupungista on rakennettu Itävalta-Unkarin vallan alla, arkkitehtuuri muistuttaa paljon Wieniä. Keskeinen paikka tätä kaupunginosaa on Piazza Unità, joka on Euroopan suurin merelle päin aukeava aukio.

Half of the city was built under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, so the architecture recembles Vienna. An iconic place of this quarter is the majestic Piazza Unità (Unity Square), which is Europe's largest sea-front square.

VANHA KAUPUNKI --- OLD TOWN (CITTA VECCHIA)

Vanhan kaupungin kapeat kujat olivat kivoja kävellä mutta autolla mennessä välillä hirvitti, mahtuuko tuosta OIKEASTI…? Ja paikallisten ajokäyttäytyminen on sitä luokkaa että täytyy olla onnellinen kun selvittiin kotiin asti ilman lommoja ja hengissä!

The narrow alleys of the old town were nice to walk but with a car it was quite terrifying..like..can you REALLY fit through there..? And the driving habits of the locals were so grazy that we are just happy that we survived back home from there without dents and alive!

SATAMA-ALUE --- THE HARBOUR AREA

 

VOITON MAJAKKA --- VICTORY LIGHTHOUSE ( IL FARO DELLA VITTORIA)

Majakalla on kaksi tarkoitusta: sen lisäksi että se auttaa laivoja navigoinnissa, se toimii myös muistomerkkinä 1. maailmansodassa kaatuneille.

The Lighthouse of the Victory has two important functions. Besides lighting the gulf of Trieste, in order to help navigation, it also serves as a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen of the first World War

ITALIAN MAKUJA --- THE TASTES OF ITALY

Pitsaa oli maistettava tietenkin ja kyllähän se oli parasta mitä ikinä olen missään maistanut!

Of course we had to taste Pizza and it was the best Pizza I´ve ever tasted!

Myös minun kala (peitetty ohuilla rapeilla perunasiivuilla) ja Jounin kana-annos veivät kielen mennessään! Kyllä se totta on että tämä kansa osaa kokata!

Also my fish (covered with thin, crispy potatoeslices) and Jouni´s chicken dish were excellent! It´s true what they say: these people really know how to cook!

THE ROMAN THEATRE

Roomalainen amfiteatteri tai mitä siitä on jäljellä, rakennettu 1. ja 2. vuosisadalla.

A Roman amphitheatre, or what is left of it. Constructed between the 1st and 2nd century

 

LINNA / CASTLE / CASTELLO MIRAMARE

Lähellä Triesten keskustaa on yksi alueen upeimmista linnoista. Itävallan arkkiherttua Maximilianille rakennettu Miramaren linna on valmistunut vuonna 1860. Merenrannalla sijaitsevan linnan sisään pääsi tutustumaan neljän euron pääsymaksulla ja sitä ympäröi suuri puisto. Linna oli kyllä ihan näkemisen arvoinen.

Near the center of Trieste is one of the region's most impressive castles. Miramare Castle was built for an Austrian Archduke Maximilian in 1860. The castle located on the seaside was accessible for four four euros entry fee and is surrounded by a large park. The castle was well worth seeing.

          

Tämän(kään) linnan sisustaja ei ole ollut sitä mieltä että vähemmän on enemmän..

The decorator of this castle didn´t apparently think that less is more..

Mutta nuo intarsiahuonekalut on kyllä aikamoisia taideteoksia

But those intarsia furnitures are really fine peaces of art

BED & BREAKFAST CASA DODIC

Yövyimme Triesten kukkuloilla Bed & Breakfast paikassa nimeltä Casa Dodic jota piti sympaattinen ja erittäin ystävällinen pariskunta. Hotellilta avautui upea näkymä alas Triesteen

We stayed the night at the hills of Trieste in a Bed & Breakfast called Casa Dodic, which was hosted by a very sympathetic and friendly couple. There was a magnificent view of the town from the hotel.

Omistajat asuivat yläkerrassa. Alakerrassa oli kolme hotellihuonetta ja aamiaishuone sekä terassi

The owners lived upstairs. There were three hotel rooms and a breakfast room with terrace downstairs

Huone oli tosi kivasti sisustettu, siisti ja moderni.

The room was really nicely decorated, clean and modern

Jokaisen hotellihuoneen edessä terassilla oli oma pöytä. Tuossa olisi ollut kiva istuskella illalla, jos ilma olisi silloin ollut parempi.

In front of every hotel room in the terrace there was a small table. If the weather would have been better in the evening, it would have been nice to sit there.

 

Aamupalahuoneen edessä oleva terassi oli myös viihtyisä

Aamupala oli kodinomainen ja täynnä erilaisia emännän tekemiä käsitöitä esim. ristipistotauluja

The breakfast room was really cosy and homelike and filled with different kind of handicraft – for example cross stitch pictures on the wall made by the owner lady.

Aamupala oli yllättävän runsas. Siihen sisältyi mm. todella herkullinen kinkkumunakas ja itse leivottua leipää ja pikkuleipiä

The breakfast was surprisingly rich. It included for example a really delicious ham-omelet and self-made bread and cookies.

TULIAINEN ITALIASTA --- A SOUVENIR FROM ITALY

Majatalon emännän tekemä munakas oli todella hyvää joten kotiin tultuamme päätin kokeilla jos osaisin tehdä munakkaan samalla tyylillä. Munakas oli todella ohut ja paistettu vain toiselta puolelta joten päällipuoli jäi puolikypsäksi.

The omelette that we had in B&B was so good that when we got back home, I decided to try to do same kind of omelette. It was really thin and fried only from the other side, so the top of it was left half-cooked.

Lisäsin omaan versiooni vielä päälle reilusti tomaattia ja kevätsipulia. Tästä tuli uusi suosikkini, herkullista!!

For my version I added lots of tomatoes and spring onions. This is my new favourite, delicious!

PS: Jos navigaattori neuvoo kääntymään niin pienelle tielle että sinne kääntymisessä täytyy vekslata,  varsinkin kun tie on niin kapea että hädintuskin yksi auto mahtuu siinä ajamaan ja tie johtaa jyrkkää vuorenrinnettä suoraan alaspäin, on ehkä parempi miettiä toisen kerran, tarkistaa navigaattorin asetukset ja valita hieman isompi tie ;)

PS: If navigator tells you to turn to a road so small, that in order to turn there you have to drive back and forth a few times and the road is so narrow that barely one car can drive there AND it leads straight down from a steep hill, it´s maybe better to check the settings of the navigator and choose a bit bigger road ;)
